Short Biography

Dr. Gina Robertiello graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Rutgers University- New Brunswick, N.J. in 1991. In January 1993, Dr. Robertiello received her Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University-School of Criminal Justice in Newark, N.J. She successfully defended her dissertation and was awarded her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice on April 17, 2000 from Rutgers University-School of Criminal Justice. Dr. Robertiello has been married to her husband Peter since 1994 (after 7 ½ years of courtship)! Peter is a financial planner with Wachovia Securities in Wayne, New Jersey. They have two beautiful daughters, Brianna Christina (4/28/98) and Gabriella Gina (5/14/00).  They also have a son (Joseph Dominic, 1/5/03).  Their pictures are plastered all over Dr. R's office-so stop by for a gander.

As a undergraduate student, Robertiello conducted interviews with convicted battered women in the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, N.J., and has continued her research efforts in this area by interviewing battered women in various shelters in New Jersey.  In 2002, she published two book reviews (see vita) and a book chapter for Sage Publications.  The book chapter was in Albert R. Roberts' (2003) book, Critical Issues in Crime and Justice, entitled "Victim Perceptions of the Utility of Domestic Violence Arrests and Restraining Orders".  Dr. Robertiello also spent time during graduate school interviewing citizens in the ten largest drug markets in Jersey City, N.J. From that experience, she was determined to obtain citizen perceptions of the police in other large cities. Thus, Dr. Robertiello conducted the research for her dissertation on the streets on Newark, asking police officers and citizens about their perceptions regarding each other. Robertiello has also evaluated a Sheriff's Department (Bergen County, NJ) and two Civilian Police Academy Programs (West Orange and Morris County, NJ), and presented data on the above mentioned at national conferences in the last few years.   Further, Dr. Robertiello also assisted with coding data on the COPS implementation (run by Dr. Joseph Palenski and Dr. Alisa Smith). Dr. Robertiello taught in the Criminal Justice Department at Seton Hall University since 1996, and was recently hired as an Associate Professor at Felician College in the Department of History and Social Sciences (fall 2005).  She also taught for two years at Monmouth University before taking the Seton Hall position, and was an adjunct for many years before taking any full-time teaching positions. Her primary interests include police behavior and citizens perceptions of that behavior, and the study of domestic violence victims. She was recently appointed an honorary deputy sheriff in Bergen County (NJ) for her work evaluating their police and sheriff's department.

Dr. Robertiello enjoys teaching Research Methodology courses in Criminal Justice, incorporating IT into the course (see syllabi), and has taught off-site courses at the Bergen County Police Academy.  Those courses include:  Police in Modern America, Victimology, Criminological Theory, Cooperative Education and Internship.
